About Event

CROs and their teams have invested heavily in building risk management capabilities and implementing frameworks such as 3LOD. Yet there remains a significant disconnect between the quality of risk capabilities and the quality of risk outcomes – well documented by the Hayne Royal Commission and underscored frequently by headlines in the financial and business press.

In an effort to address this disconnect, CROs and their teams are turning their attention to risk culture - how culture influences risk management and risk outcomes.

In these two interactive workshops for CROs and Senior Risk Leaders, Adaptive Cultures facilitates an exploration of the challenges to deepening risk ownership and embedding quality risk practices, and participants will develop strategies they can implement in their organisations to improve risk culture. Topics include:

  • the core qualities and capabilities that support influence on risk topics,

  • approaches to broaden and deepen risk ownership,

  • what’s working well and less well in the 3LOD framework and FAR implementation,

  • ways to complement structural risk tools with adaptive methods that can create a truly embedded risk framework, and

  • how to engage executive peers more fully in this work.

About

Presilience® is effectively Risk Intelligence in practice.

It is the mindset and approach that enables you to successfully prevent (where possible), prepare for, respond to, and recover from events, crises, or emergencies – whilst still being able to look for, identify and capitalise on opportunities.

With the world’s current Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) environment, never has the demand on our ability to build not just resilience, but also Presilience®, within a team or organisation been so critical to long-term success.

The course is delivered by the Institute of Presilience® (RTO#4785). Australian Nationally Recognised Skills Certificate including the following units will be issued upon successful completion:

NAT11056001 – Integrate the psychology of risk to decision making

NAT11056003 – Manage disruption, crisis, and opportunity
NAT11056004 – Implement and review organisational high reliability

Course Overview

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who undertake specialist resilience and risk management roles, both internally and externally to an organisation. These roles include cross-industry tasks and responsibilities relating to corporate governance and risk management, business continuity, crisis management, leadership, innovation, and high reliability teams.

Individuals in these roles have autonomy in performing tasks, apply solutions to a range of often complex and ambiguous problems, and research, analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources. They apply their initiative to plan and respond, to lead teams, to manage change, to coordinate and evaluate courses, to challenge and facilitate risk-based conversations, and to establish and maintain high reliability teams.

The management of risk is a dynamic and evolving practice. To support this evolution, RMIA has partnered with Associate Professors Ben Brooks and Steve Curnin, to deliver this unique course, ‘Strategic Foresight for Risk Professionals’. This course will provide participants with the insight required to determine if future risk-driven scenario planning is something their organisation should pursue. We call this type of scenario-planning ‘future risk-driven’ because it uses structured processes to explore consequences and the associated opportunities of situations in future time horizons.

Steve and Ben have packed this course with insights from over decade of research and even more practical experience in risk-driven scenario planning. They are master facilitators and experienced educators with years of experience in virtual course delivery. They will provide you with insights about the value and science behind risk-driven scenario planning. Steve and Ben personally produced most of the research that this course uses, so they speak intimately to this, and can provide all the insight you need to successfully identify the benefits for your organisation.

During the course you will develop a plausible future risk-driven scenario with your fellow course participants. The course is fully online over 3-hours and is size-limited to maximize interactions with the teaching team.

So, what is involved in our Strategic Foresight for Risk Professionals course?

  • Understanding the fundamentals and application of scenario planning.

  • Learn how scenario planning can be integrated into risk management.

  • Diagnose the maturity of scenario planning in your organisation.

  • Identify treatment options to enhance the maturity level.

  • Apply the Stretch Think Loops technique – a unique scenario planning technique.

You’ll leave with an understanding of why and how to risk-based scenario can be used in your organisation.

The average piece of business advice to an executive takes about 8 hours of your and your team’s time to prepare and 15 minutes to deliver.

Those 15 minutes simply cannot be wasted.

About

RMIA is proud to bring the risk community Bryan Whitefield’s Persuasive Adviser Program, which has been delivered successfully to full-houses across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors.

The Persuasive Adviser Program tackles the challenge risk advisers, practitioners and managers have with getting their message and key advice through to their stakeholders.

It will give risk practitioners all you will need to make the difference you know you can make, so you can create the change that is needed in your organisations.

Join the Persuasive Adviser Program to learn practical tools and techniques that will enable you to influence your stakeholders as a trusted Adviser and have a greater impact on outcomes.

Every attendee to the Persuasive Adviser Program will get a complimentary copy of Bryan Whitefield’s book, Winning Conversations: How to Turn Red Tape Into Blue Ribbon.

Course Overview

  • Perceptions of internal advisers

  • Achieving Persuasive Adviser status

The Pathfinder Model

  • Why decision making can be improved

  • MCI - Motivation - Clarification - Implementation

Stand – Paint – Tell – Make

  • How to stand in your internal client’s shoes

  • How to paint them a picture

  • How to tell them a story

  • How to make them believe

Action Plan

  • Developing your toolbox

  • Planning your journey

  • Making yourself accountable

One of the most common complaints Bryan hears from internal advisers of all kinds (admin, finance, HR, IT, risk, compliance, procurement and audit as examples) is that it is often difficult to get some business leaders to listen to them and even harder to get them to act on their advice. He hears things like:

“Sometimes I feel like I am there just to keep them out of trouble with the boss, they don’t really see me as a key adviser.”

“It is because what I do is not sexy like sales or marketing (private sector)/like the Minister’s favourite program (public sector).”

“If I was the CEO they would sit up and listen!”

While all of these comments are examples of the challenges internal advisers need to overcome to cut through with their advice, they are not the cause. There is more going on.

For starters, most advisers have to be a corporate cop from time to time. They have to say to the business that certain policies, frameworks, and processes have to be followed. Worse still, sometimes advisors have to report a problem when the business has not done the right thing.

It then makes it very hard to turn around the next day and say to a business leader, "I am your trusted adviser on this and you should heed my advice."

The imperative for an internal adviser is to solve problems for your internal clients. The way to do that is to stand in their shoes, understand their problems, and deliver solutions.

Consider the trust scale in the diagram below. Are you seen as a controller, like a financial controller, or an expert? If so you are not having the impact you could, you are not making the difference you know you can make.

The Persuasive Adviser Program: How to turn red tape into blue ribbon will give you all you need to make the difference you know you can make, to get invited to provide your advice 5 or 10 times more than you are now so you can create the change that is needed. While it covers so many of the traditional elements of a trusted adviser program such as listening and influencing skills it has so much more.

Learning Objectives

Here is what you will learn in the program:

  • How best to stand in the shoes of your stakeholders and internal clients, including the executives and the board.

  • How to paint them a picture to clarify and engage.

  • How to use stories to connect and inspire.

  • How best to ensure you have so much credibility, they cannot help but follow your advice.

Underlying each of these is the MCI Decision Model that is the subject of Bryan's book DECIDE How to Manage the Risk in Your Decision Making. The model is the key that will help you to unlock the door to the decision-making processes of those you are advising so you can deliver the right message at the right time to get the right decision.

Format of the Course

Two half-day online in-person Learning Workshops facilitated by Bryan Whitefield (4 hours for each of the 2 half-day online Learning Workshops). An interactive workshop series with ample time to participate, share and network.

For many organisations, project management fails to effectively align to their risk management framework. The statistics speak for themselves with >15% of large-scale IT projects failing, and approximately 50% of others facing significant challenges that compromise objectives, clearly highlighting the substantial risks associated with inadequate project risk management practices.

These two half day workshops will:

  • Guide you through the fundamental concepts of project risk management, how it supports all stages of the project from concept through to delivery and Business as Usual

  • Help develop your understanding of the importance of alignment of project methodology with risk management strategies

  • Demonstrate how aligning project management and risk practices through actionable strategies that mitigate risks can enhance project outcomes

These workshops have broad application to multiple types of projects and is designed to bring a foundational understanding of project risk to non-risk professionals, and project management to risk professionals. The course will appeal to those involved in project development and delivery, as a project manager, a risk professional, or for those with the need to have a greater understanding of how to align both to increase the likelihood of project success - on time, on budget, in accordance with scope and design.

The WA State Chapter is delighted to invite you to an insightful morning event on the topic Understanding Geopolitical Risks for WA in 2025. This is a fantastic opportunity to explore critical trends shaping our region and connect with like-minded professionals.

About Event

There can no longer be any doubt that we are living through a period of increasing geopolitical volatility. What the World Economic Forum describes as a ‘polycrisis’ is creating real risks for organisations if they are not facing into this changing reality. The disruptions are also generating opportunities for those organisations which are on the front foot.

Western Australia is right in the thick of these rapidly evolving geopolitical risks and opportunities.  Countries are realising that maintaining access to the metals and minerals needed for advanced tech and the energy transition – many of which are produced in WA – is a matter of national security. But that doesn’t mean that these commodities provide certain profitability for resources companies. In fact, as they scramble to shore up supply, some governments have spurred over-investment that has contributed to low global prices.

These dynamic geopolitical forces are complex, but with the right systems and processes in place, leaders can better understand and navigate geopolitics and optimise opportunities. Building in knowledge of the broader geopolitical trends will help companies to assess and manage over-the-horizon risks.

Leading companies are facing these challenges head on, not just hoping the world will go back to ‘normal’ soon – because it won’t. Jon Berry (Associate Director of KPMG’s Australia Geopolitics Hub) will be joining us to unpack these issues, and to discuss how they could impact Western Australia in the years ahead.

About the Speaker

Jon Berry

Associate Director, Australia Geopolitics Hub

Jon Berry is Associate Director of the Australia Geopolitics Hub at KPMG. He provides analysis and advice for businesses seeking to understand how geopolitical risks and opportunities impact their operations and ambitions.

Jon is an experienced international trade, investment and geopolitical analyst. He has had a varied 20-year career including roles in Australia, China, Japan, France, Italy, Africa, Switzerland and India. Jon worked for ten years as a Melbourne-based consultant, advising most of Australia’s largest export industries, and representing their interests in Canberra and at international cooperation fora.

From 2008 to 2010, Jon worked within the UN system, as an emergency logistics officer for the World Food Programme. This role involved frequent missions to Africa and the Middle East where he saw firsthand both the challenges and opportunities represented by international trade, and the geopolitical forces that shape and influence the decisions of governments. This experience helps Jon understand and anticipate the varied ways that governments respond to major global events and trends.

Jon has an MBA focusing on international and intergovernmental relations from the University of Geneva, as well as  a Master of Public Policy from Melbourne University with a focus on trade policy and international relations. Jon has published or contributed to numerous research papers for organisations including the Australian APEC Study Centre, the APEC Policy Support Unit, Canada’s Fraser Institute and Asialink. He is regularly interviewed by national and international media on issues of trade policy.

Registration will close on Monday, 10 February 2025.

About the Event

CROs and their teams have made significant progress to improve the identification and management of risk in their organisations. The foundations of risk appetite and supporting policies, frameworks, and processes are important for improving outcomes for consumers and financial systems.

Yet there is much work to be done to bring outcomes into alignment with community expectations and organisational aspirations.

Adaptive Cultures identifies a crucial role for risk leaders to bridge the remaining gap between technical risk management and risk outcomes. Adaptive Cultures makes the case that risk leaders are extremely well-suited to lead on risk culture and guide webinar participants on an exploration of three qualities risk leaders can contribute in their organisations for greater influence on risk embedment and customer outcomes.

About the Event

We need to revolutionise how Risk is managed and approached. Revolutionise, not evolve, not modify, but create a Revolution and move Risk into the mainstream and forefront of people’s consciousness. To do this, we need to change a few things. Here are the top 5 things for a successfully Risk Mature organisation to focus on.

  1. Build it in, don’t bolt it on! We move away from adding Risk conversations as an afterthought or an embuggerance; something we just “have to do”. We make Risk part of our DNA. We talk about it early and often.

  2. We shift Risk into the conversation we want to have by truly understanding the value behind Proactive Risk Management (PRM). We do the maths to understand how PRM creates a better bottom line.

  3. We remove the fear of Risk. Use psychology to normalise Risk rather than demonise it.

  4. Leverage Risk Leadership. Leaders become highly risk-literate and integrate this knowledge into their leadership stance rather than taking the ostrich approach.

  5. Risk Innovation (RI) is the magic bullet that we are missing today. This is a way to move the dial way up. Innovation is how we create our own futures; Risk becomes the driving force behind the future we are aiming for.

In our session we will touch on these areas that anyone can use to take Risk Management to the next level, and the organisation into unbelievable success levels.

Welcome to the Enterprise Risk Management course, RMIA's signature course and a certification pre-requisite presented by our Training Partner, Bryan Whitefield Consulting.

About

All organisations, no matter whether private, government or not-for-profit have one thing in common – they all take risk to achieve their goals.

Unfortunately, too many organisations either don’t have any formal approach to considering the risks they are taking, or they utilise forms of risk management that are below par. That is, they are not in line with the principles and guidelines of better practice as defined in AS ISO 31000.

The purpose of the course is to provide you with the requisite knowledge to design, implement and operate enterprise risk programs for the successful management of organisational risk.

Course Overview

Introducing AS ISO 31000:2018

  1. The course is aligned to the international standard on risk.

  2. The standard is a guideline for any organisation that can be adapted to suit the needs of the organisation.

  3. It provides principles, framework and process for managing organisational risk.
