Managing CPD Points

Stay on track by participating in events, training, and professional development opportunities that align with your goals.

RMIA members are required to meet their Continuing Professional Development Requirements (CPD) by:

  • Maintaining knowledge and skills that are appropriate for their activities and responsibilities, and are consistent with the training standards

  • Updating their knowledge and skills, especially in areas where there is continual change (e.g. legislation, regulatory policies and standards, and new market practices)

  • Developing new knowledge and skills to assist with their current role or roles contemplated in the future

  • Points are accumulated over a 3 year period and audited at the end of each 3 year cycle.

CPD Cycle, Required Points and Anniversary Date

The CPD cycle runs for a period of 3 years, but 1/3 of your points must be accumulated each year to maintain your membership and/or your awarded professional certification. This means, that you can accumulate additional points in any 1 year in the cycle, but you cannot gain the full points for the 3 years in 1 year. At the end of each 3 year cycle, the points revert to zero and you must accumulate the above points for your next 3 year cycle.

For example: If a CPRA gains 30 points in Year 1, 25 points in Year 2 (current total 55 points out of the required 60), they must still accumulate 20 points in Year 3 to maintain certification.

The 3 year cycle commences on the membership anniversary date (i.e. the date you become a professional member).

General CPD Requirements

The following general requirements apply:

a) Complete at least the minimum CPD points per annum, as defined in the table above.

b) CPD hours/points reported must relate to the Eligible Activities Categories defined in Appendix 1 of this criteria document.

c) Evidence of attendance at CPD events must be retained by each person, as the member may be required to provide evidence supporting their points claimed.

d) The RMIA reserves the right to audit CPD records and request evidence of attendance.

e) The RMIA National Office will regularly monitor all logs, and will advise members via email or other means when they have not achieved the required CPD points, especially towards the end of the 3 year cycle.

f) The RMIA-appointed Professional Development Committee has the RMIA board’s delegation and authority to review, monitor, and amend the CPD criteria, including the range of CPD eligible activities and associated points. This committee may appoint a panel who could formally audit and verify points recorded and claimed.

g) Failure to log CPD points and maintain the minimum number of CPD points throughout the cycle, without notification to the RMIA, will result in revocation of the member certification designation and the individual’s member status. This process is defined in the RMIA Constitution and the Membership and Certification Regulations. This is managed and controlled by the National Office, with the support of the Professional Development Committee where necessary.

h) You do not have to achieve CPD points for both your membership class and the certified member level once you have been awarded one of the certified member levels.

Applying for Exemption and/or Inactivity

If you find yourself in circumstances such as being unemployed, on long service leave, in financial difficulties, or any other situation that is preventing you from undertaking annual CPD, you can formally apply to the RMIA Head Office detailing your circumstances and requesting that you are given a short-term exemption until your circumstances change.

As a guide, this notification should be provided no later than three (3) months before the end of the 3 year cycle for the individual.

If you are formally approved, you will be advised what period this covers, and your log will be noted. Any CPD points you have logged or gained during this period can be considered and carried over to the new period. RMIA Head Office will provide you with guidance on this. Obtaining this exemption for a set period will not impact your membership, or if you have a certified member designation, you will still be able to access all member entitlements and continue using the post-nominals.

To formally apply for an exemption, contact the RMIA office via email or telephone.

Professional Member and Certified Professional Member

RMIA members and members with certification designation, are required to maintain their RMIA membership, including paying their membership fee when it becomes due.

The awarded professional certification designation (CPRA®, CPRM®, CCRO®) will be revoked if an RMIA-certified member fails to keep their membership status as current.

Professional members who do not pay their membership fee each year or meet the annual CPD requirements are not meeting the requirements of RMIA Membership. As such, membership will be deemed as lapsed or not having met the requirements, and therefore revoked.

The RMIA will make best efforts to contact the member before this drastic measure occurs.

Requirements of Logging CPD Points

CPD points are to be logged and tracked by the member and recorded on the RMIA’s online digital system, accessed through your member portal. This should be done regularly throughout the year.

If you pay or register to attend an RMIA-conducted event, we will automatically record the points gained through your attendance and or participation at the end of the event.

It is the member’s responsibility to regularly review and verify their log on the RMIA digital system and ensure RMIA activities have resulted in the CPD log being updated.
